Review – meet and mix lunch event January 2010

On 28 January 2010, Birmingham Future’s Mentoring Committee hosted this year’s first Meet and Mix Lunch at Wong’s restaurant, off Summer Row and we were delighted to welcome our chosen speaker, local Olympic hopeful Julian Thomas, to the event. Attendees were able to enjoy a delicious two-course buffet lunch whilst listening to Julian’s thoughts on how mentoring can help individuals stay at the top of their game, even (and especially) when things aren’t going exactly to plan!

An Aston-born athlete, Julian, is a member of the Birchfield Harriers team and hopes to be successful in the 200 metre sprint in 2012. He gave members a lively and interesting account of his professional life, including the obstacles that threatened to damage his athletic career, such as meningitis, knee surgery and a burst appendix. He also provided a useful insight into how he felt coaching and mentoring had helped him to overcome these hurdles.

Julian’s talk was a refreshing example of how the mentoring is invaluable in all professions and we wish Julian the best of luck for the 2012 Olympics!
